Because the Watchtower Society, for years, had decided that having a blood transfusion was a mortal sin. Our young ones were indoctrinated to believe that those who accept blood transfusions to save their lives will be killed by Jehovah God at Armageddon, which will come very soon. They were also told that blood transfusions do not really save lives, but pollute recipients, give them AIDS and hepatitis and may even transfer to them the personality of a criminal blood donor. Now the Watchtower Society has permitted every single fraction of blood except for the skin of red blood cells. This means they accept 99.9% of blood. If Josh McAuley had been told this he would still be alive today. But, the Watchtower Society has not informed its members that they can now accept 99.9% of blood. They are not admitting that the doctrinal change has occurred. Instead they are letting JWs find out through other parties like AJWRB that they can now accept blood. This means that some JWs will face life threatening situations and die because no one told them that it is now official that they can accept blood transfusions.
A witness who accepts a blood transfusion nowadays will not be disfellowshipped. This policy has been abandoned. So, no JW needs to fear shunning if they accept a blood transfusion. Just as long as they do not promote their acceptance of blood verbally in the congregation, they will not need to worry about being prosecuted by JW elders. Also, if they are interviewed by JW elders they should keep in mind to act sorry for taking the blood, if you decide to admit taking blood. But aside from this precaution no JW needs to worry any longer about being punished for taking blood. If you are a JW and you have been disassociated for taking a blood transfusion you should contact AJWRB immediately. There are legal solutions to this scenario, but as of Dec. 2011, no case of JWs being disassociated are known in the world. Also keep in mind that all medical information about yourself and your family members is private and no elder has the right to even know what procedures you accepted or didn't accept. So, again, if an elder approaches you about your medical choices, you should simply say it is none of his business and deny any wrongdoing. You can ask them to produce any proof that you accepted blood, and if they do, you can sue them or possibly press criminal charges against them for revealing private medical information about you. Any JWs in your case that procured medical information about you because they are in the medical field and had access to your records, can be prosecuted by law and will lose their job and license.
As parents we were taught that if we save the lives of our children by secretly accepting a blood transfusion, God may punish us right now by making our children stillborn or will at least kill them in the soon-to-come Battle of Armageddon, when they will become manure on the ground. But the Society doesn't make these claims any longer.
UNTIL 1952, the Society told us the same thing about vaccinations. UNTIL 1980, the Society told us the same thing about organ transplants. NOW, these medical practices are permitted. Those who were loyal to these rules spilled their blood in vain.
Will you sacrifice your child over this issue? If you answer yes, stop and consider how you will feel when the Society finally abandons the doctrine in print.
